Mommy, am I a boy or girl?

“Kathy Witterick and David Stocker say their baby should be able to develop its own sexual identity without having to conform to social stereotypes or bow to pre-determined expectations associated with gender.”

For anyone living under a rock at the moment you may not have heard about this story, but the couple have decided not to tell anyone whether their newborn is a boy or girl biologically because they want it to work it out for itself.

The world appears to be split on this story, many applauding the decision and then on the other side many disagreeing. For me as a gay man, many would expect me to support what this family is doing. However I don’t!

I agree with the principle behind what they are doing which is to prevent stereotypes dictating the way their child grows up. However I think the way they are going about it is not only wrong but could potentially lead to an extremely confused child.

To begin with we are born either male or female physically and that is a given. Therefore I see nothing wrong with a child being labelled as male or female. I believe not going along with this will lead to a child growing up confused. This child will be asking questions at a young age that will cause confusion.

I have no problem with a child being raised to develop it’s own identity. Gender roles are wrong and I believe strongly a child should be given every opportunity to flourish in whatever way it decides whether that be boy, girl or otherwise however I feel that the way they are going about it is actually pushing their child into another box, that of ambiguity or androgyny. It is wrong to push your child in any direction but saying that you are doing it so that the child can chose it’s own sex will just lead to a child that is more confused than ever.

I will be interested to follow this family up in 20 years and see how it all worked out.

Are you being true to yourself?

In today's society there is a pressure on all of us to look good and to look a certain way. For example the clothes we wear, the shoes we wear, the bling we wear, and to have the latest designer lables. And some of us like to lable ourselfs in who we are as people. I for one dont like to offend anyone in the way I dress or the way I Look.

Continuing: And I dont want to label myself for that matter It is obvious already. We all need to feel confident in who we are and our apperance, because at the end of the day you need to feel happy within yourself.
