Open Doors

I don’t often talk about individual support services for people who are gay but right now I want to change that. Here in Brisbane there is a support service for young gay and lesbian youth called Open Doors. I would really like to hear from anyone who has been involved with this service. Click HERE to view their site.

I have heard from people that this is an amazing service and I would highly recommend that if you are young and living in Brisbane that you check it out. Particularly if you are in need of support or are in the coming out process.

Open Doors runs several different groups to meet the needs of a range of young people, including;

  • Reconnect Program for LGBT young people aged 12 to 18 who are homeless or risk of homelessness and their families

  • Drop-In Days for LGBT young people aged 12 to 18

  • Young and Proud for LGBT young people aged 18 to 24

  • Jellybeans for transgender young people aged under 24

What else does Open Doors do?

  • Food

  • Psychologist

  • Internet Access

  • Outreach workers

  • Training and education with service providers

I personally wish that there had been services like this available when I came out. Unfortunately there was not. However spending years working in the Not For Profit sector I have seen first hand the lack of services available to groups in need. I have always spent a lot of my time searching and applying for funding for my own employer and know how difficult it can be. What inspires me in this day and age are the possibilities in Social Enterprise which is finding ways to self fund. However it is still necessary for organisations particularly in the LGBT sector to gain funding from donations and government funding. Corporate funding would be great but social acceptance of LGBT issues is still only for the brave.

I am passionate about the industry and certainly know the struggles but as someone who specialises in the strategic vision I can see the possibilities. The key is support. For Open Doors they are helping develop those that will be responsible for shaping the future. They are shaping those that are the future. Please show your support in some way.
